Gemstones are the last great unregulated category in Indian commerce. We propose to fix that.

Overview

The global gemstone market is worth over USD 35 billion annually, of which India accounts for USD 1.6 billion in coloured-stone exports (rubies, emeralds, sapphires, semi-precious). Jaipur is the world's largest cutting and trading hub. And yet — domestically, the buyer experience is broken: opaque pricing, unverified certifications, treated and synthetic stones sold as natural, and almost no recourse.

Gemstone buyers in India today come in three flavours — astrology-driven (the largest cohort, buying rubies, blue sapphires, yellow sapphires, emeralds, gomed on jyotish recommendation), investment-driven (rare collectible stones), and jewellery-led (cocktail rings, custom designs). All three are underserved by the existing supply chain.

BIDUA Industries proposes, if validated, a certified gemstone trading platform — every stone individually IGI / GJEPC / GIA / GRS certified, accompanied by 360° video, microscope photograph, and expert consultation. Optional escrow on first transactions. A neutral platform between Jaipur's cutters and India's astrology + investment buyers.

Half the gemstones sold in India are not what they claim to be. A certified, escrowed, return-protected marketplace isn't a feature — it's the entire category waiting to be built.

Why now

The opportunity, on its own terms.

01

Astrology demand is huge and growing.

Tens of millions of Indians buy gemstones on jyotish recommendation every year — a category currently dominated by local pandits and small jewellers with zero accountability.

02

Certification infrastructure now exists.

GJEPC, IGI Jaipur, GRS, Gübelin and others now offer credible lab-grading reports. The customer-facing layer is missing.

03

Lab-grown coloured stones are flooding the unorganised market.

Without verified platforms, buyers cannot tell heated/synthetic from natural. The trust gap is widening, not narrowing.

04

Investment narrative is rising.

With gold at record highs, alternative tangible assets — rare unheated Ceylon sapphires, Colombian emeralds, Burmese rubies — are gaining attention from family-office buyers.

Business model

How it works, end to end.

01

Certified marketplace

Every listed stone individually graded by an accredited lab (IGI, GJEPC, GRS, GIA, Gübelin, SSEF). Origin, treatment, weight, cut and clarity disclosed in a standardised data sheet.

02

360° media + microscope view

Each stone shot in 360° video and macro photograph under standard lighting. Inclusions visible. Buyer sees more than they would in a Jaipur showroom.

03

Expert consultation

In-house gemologists + partner jyotish consultants offer free 15-minute consultations. Up-sell to detailed buying advisory (₹999–₹4,999) for high-ticket purchases.

04

Escrow & return

Optional platform-held escrow for first transactions and stones above ₹1 L. 7-day return window with lab re-verification — buyer pays only re-test cost if false claim is not proven.

05

Vendor network

Pre-vetted Jaipur, Mumbai and Coimbatore cutters and wholesalers. Tiered seller status (verified, gold, platinum) based on transaction history and dispute rate.

Competitive landscape

Who else is here — and why we're different.

01 GemstoneUniverse / Jupiter Gem Specialist online: Astrology-led, strong niche. Limited scale and depth in investment tiers.
02 Gem Select / Gem Rock Auctions Global platforms: Strong on global selection, weak on India-specific astrology demand and after-sales.
03 Local jewellers + pandit network Unorganised: Dominant by volume. Opaque, untrusted, but deeply embedded in buying culture.
What BIDUA does differently
  • Certification mandatory — no listing without a recognised lab report.
  • Escrow + 7-day return with lab re-verification — first time at category scale in India.
  • Bilingual astrology consultation embedded — bridges traditional buyers and digital UX.
  • Direct relationships with Jaipur cutting hub — better pricing, better provenance.

Risks & mitigation

What can go wrong — and how we plan for it.

Risk 1

Synthetic / treated stones slipping through

Mitigation: Independent lab partner re-tests random batches monthly. Sellers banned permanently on first proven violation.

Risk 2

Astrology category sensitivity

Mitigation: Never make astrological efficacy claims. Position as buying-experience platform; jyotish guidance is advisory only.

Risk 3

Gem price disputes

Mitigation: Transparent comparable-listings index. Independent third-party valuation available on request.

Risk 4

Vendor concentration in Jaipur

Mitigation: Diversify to Mumbai, Coimbatore and select international sources (Sri Lanka, Thailand) over time.

Risk 5

Regulatory / customs (for imports)

Mitigation: GJEPC-aligned compliance. Dedicated customs and bond logistics partner for inbound rare stones.

Common questions

Questions partners and investors actually ask.

How do I know the stone is real?

Every stone ships with an individual lab report from IGI / GJEPC / GRS / GIA — labs with global recognition. You can independently verify the certificate number on the lab's portal.

Can I return the gemstone?

Yes — 7-day return with optional independent lab re-verification. If the stone doesn't match its certificate, the seller pays all re-test and shipping costs.

Do you offer astrology consultation?

Yes — free 15-minute consults with partner jyotish experts. Detailed paid advisory available for high-ticket purchases. We do not make claims about astrological efficacy.

Are your stones natural or heated?

Both categories are clearly tagged in every listing — natural unheated, heated, lab-grown, synthetic, glass-filled etc. Treatment disclosure is mandatory.

What is the price range?

From ₹5,000 semi-precious stones to investment-grade rare gems above ₹50 lakh. Listings are filterable by budget.

Do you offer custom jewellery setting?

Yes — pair any loose stone with a custom-design service. Two design rounds, CAD preview, delivery in 21–28 days.

Is it safe to ship gemstones?

All shipments are fully insured, tamper-evident, and tracked. For stones above ₹1 L, signature + ID verification on delivery is mandatory.

Can I sell my old stones on the platform?

Yes — once we open the secondary market tier (planned 2029). Stones will need fresh lab certification before re-listing.
