Overview

India is the rare large country where print newspapers are still growing. Dainik Jagran, Dainik Bhaskar, Hindustan, Times of India, Eenadu, Malayala Manorama — together they push ~140 million physical copies a day to 425 million+ readers across Hindi, English and 14 other languages.

Live Newspaper is an idea-stage platform that turns every printed page into a launching pad for video. A QR code printed next to a news photograph opens a 30–90 second video — the interview clip, the press-conference soundbite, the on-ground reporter's b-roll — playing on the reader's phone with sub-3-second latency. No app install. Just camera and tap.

The model is a B2B SaaS layer for print publishers and an ad-tech rail for advertisers — not a consumer destination. BIDUA does not become a publisher. BIDUA becomes the picks-and-shovels infrastructure underneath every QR-augmented newspaper page in India.

Print didn't die in India — it just stopped competing with video. A QR code on the front page is the cheapest, lowest-friction bridge a 200-year-old medium has ever been handed.

Why now

The opportunity, on its own terms.

01

Print isn't shrinking in India.

Unlike the US/UK collapse, Indian newspaper circulation grew through 2024 — driven by Tier-2/3 readership, vernacular language growth and the morning-coffee habit. Publishers want digital revenue without losing the print reader.

02

Every Indian phone scans QR now.

UPI taught 700M+ Indians the habit of point-camera-at-square. The hardest behaviour-change in mobile AR history happened for free, courtesy NPCI.

03

Video CPMs are 5× print CPMs.

A static print ad earns ₹300–600 CPM. A pre-roll on a publisher-owned video stream can earn ₹1,500–3,000 CPM. The math for the publisher is obvious — they just need the rail.

04

Adjacency to BIDUA Hosting.

Serving short-form video to millions of phones every morning is a hosting-and-CDN problem before it is a media problem. BIDUA Hosting already has the infrastructure thesis — Live Newspaper is the killer use case.

Market opportunity

Sized in three rings.

Total addressable
~₹26,000 cr + ₹18,000 cr / yr (expected)
Indian print ad + digital video market
Digital video 22% CAGR to 2030
Serviceable
~₹2,500 cr / yr (potential)
QR-augmented print share if validated
Capturable from top-15 publishers
BIDUA share aim
3–5 publisher contracts
BIDUA 2030 target
~5 M daily scans · ~₹150 cr GMV
  • Top 5 Indian publishers reach 250M+ daily readers — enough scan volume to monetise pre-roll meaningfully.
  • Brand advertisers (FMCG, auto, telecom) already buy both print and digital — Live Newspaper bundles the two into one buy.
  • Election cycles, cricket tournaments, major events generate spike-day scan volumes 10–20× baseline.
  • Regional language publishers are an under-served opportunity — most ad-tech ignores Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Marathi audiences.

Business model

How it works, end to end.

01

Publisher SaaS layer

Publishers integrate the Live Newspaper CMS plugin. Reporters upload a video clip when filing the story; the system auto-generates the QR code and embeds it into the InDesign layout. Zero workflow disruption for the print desk.

02

Video delivery infrastructure

Videos hosted on BIDUA Hosting CDN with edge nodes across India for sub-second start times. Adaptive bitrate, mobile-first encoding, Hindi/regional caption support. Cost-per-stream optimised for 30–90 sec clips.

03

Scan landing experience

QR scan opens a lightweight HTML5 player — no app install. Pre-roll ad (5–15 sec), then the story clip. Optional subscribe-to-publisher button. Optional 'read full story' deep-link into publisher's existing app.

04

Ad-tech monetisation

Pre-roll inventory sold via Live Newspaper's own ad server plus header-bidding integration. Publisher gets 60–70% revenue share. BIDUA keeps 15–25%. Direct brand deals available for spike events (elections, cricket finals).

05

Premium analytics

Publishers get a dashboard showing scan-volume by story, by city, by time-of-day. First time they have ever known which print article actually got read. Sold as an annual subscription tier on top of the base rev-share.

Revenue streams

Three compounding phases.

Year 1 (Build & pilot)

Publisher acquisition

  • Pilot with 1 regional publisher (free integration)
  • CMS plugin development
  • Video CDN cost optimisation
  • Brand pilot campaigns (3–5 advertisers)
Years 2–3 (Scale)

Ad revenue

  • Pre-roll ad revenue share with publishers
  • Direct brand campaign sales
  • Analytics SaaS subscription
  • Spike-event premium inventory (elections, IPL)
Years 4–5 (Expansion)

Adjacencies

  • QR-AR for magazines, textbooks, packaging
  • White-label platform for international publishers
  • Reader subscription paywall on video tier
  • First-party data monetisation (consented)

Timeline

Patient cadence, deliberate steps.

  1. Q4 2026
Concept validation — 3 publisher conversations, technical proof-of-concept for QR-to-video pipeline.
  2. Q2 2027
CMS plugin and player MVP built. CDN architecture finalised on BIDUA Hosting.
  3. Q4 2027
First regional publisher pilot — one Hindi or Tamil daily, one city edition, 30-day live test.
  4. 2028
Scale to 2–3 publishers. First brand ad campaigns. Analytics dashboard launches.
  5. 2029–2030
National rollout with at least one top-5 English daily. Adjacencies into magazines and outdoor ads.
  6. 2031–2032
International expansion (Bangladesh, Nepal, Indonesia) — markets with healthy print circulation and smartphone density.

Competitive landscape

Who else is here — and why we're different.

01 Layar / Blippar (legacy AR) International AR platforms: Pre-QR era image-recognition AR. Too heavy — needed app install. Largely defunct in India.
02 Publisher in-house apps Self-built: Times Internet, Bhaskar Digital etc. have apps but no QR-to-video bridge from print. They are potential customers, not competitors.
03 YouTube short-form embed Generic video: Works technically but gives publisher zero margin, zero analytics, zero ad control. The reason Live Newspaper exists.
What BIDUA does differently
  • Built specifically for the Indian print-first workflow — Hindi/regional language support, low-bandwidth player, kirana-phone tested.
  • Publishers own the revenue and the data, unlike YouTube/Meta embeds.
  • Sub-3-second scan-to-play SLA, enforced via BIDUA Hosting's India-resident CDN.
  • Bundled brand-ad sales arm — Live Newspaper does the heavy lifting publishers' digital teams can't.

Risks & mitigation

What can go wrong — and how we plan for it.

Risk 1

Publisher inertia

Mitigation: Start with one progressive regional publisher hungry for digital revenue. Use the case study to pull in nationals. Free integration for the first three partners.

Risk 2

Low QR scan-through rates

Mitigation: A/B test placement, prompts, and incentive copy. Target 5–8% scan rate (industry benchmark for print QR is 2–4%) via creative design and reader-education campaigns.

Risk 3

Ad-fill rate volatility

Mitigation: Header-bidding with multiple SSPs (Google AdManager, Magnite, PubMatic). Direct brand sales for spike events. House ads for unfilled inventory.

Risk 4

Bandwidth costs at scale

Mitigation: Aggressive adaptive bitrate, edge caching on BIDUA Hosting infrastructure, video duration capped at 90 sec. CDN cost modelled in unit economics from day one.

Risk 5

Print itself declining

Mitigation: India is an outlier — circulation still growing. Even at a pessimistic 5%/yr decline, the absolute base remains the world's largest print market through 2035.

Common questions

Questions partners and investors actually ask.

Does the reader need to install an app?

No. The QR opens an HTML5 video player in the phone's default browser. Frictionless — the same experience as scanning a UPI QR.

Is this live anywhere today?

No. Live Newspaper is an idea-stage project. We are validating publisher interest and building the technical proof-of-concept through 2026–2027.

Who owns the video content?

The publisher. Live Newspaper is infrastructure — we host, deliver and monetise, but the editorial and the rights stay with the newsroom.

What happens to the QR after the news day passes?

It keeps working. The video lives at a permanent URL. Archive pages become evergreen — a 6-month-old story can still earn ad revenue when re-shared.

How does the publisher integrate it?

A CMS plugin compatible with major Indian publisher stacks (Adobe InDesign workflows, custom CMS APIs). Reporter uploads video → system auto-generates QR → designer drops it into layout.

What about regional languages?

First-class. The player UI, captions and ad creatives all support Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam and Gujarati from launch.

How does this relate to BIDUA Hosting?

BIDUA Hosting provides the India-resident CDN and edge nodes. Live Newspaper is one of the first large-scale customers — internally validating the hosting infrastructure thesis.

Can advertisers run their own QR campaigns?

Yes. A print ad can carry a QR linking to a brand video — same rail, same player, same analytics. This is a parallel monetisation track alongside editorial QRs.
