Overview

Every Indian who has stood in a Kumbh Mela crowd, attended Sunburn, watched the 2023 Manipur internet shutdown unfold, or been stranded after a Himachal flood, knows the same feeling: full signal bars, zero usable network. Cell towers buckle under load, governments throttle data during unrest, and natural disasters take infrastructure offline for days. The phone in your pocket still works as hardware — it just can't reach anyone.

A Bluetooth mesh chat app changes that calculus. Each device speaks Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to nearby devices in a peer-to-peer mesh. A message hops from phone to phone until it reaches the intended recipient — no SIM, no tower, no data plan. Range is roughly 100 metres direct, but the mesh effect extends usable range to 1 km+ in any reasonably dense crowd. The technology has existed for a decade (Bridgefy, FireChat, Briar) but no India-localised, India-trusted version has shipped at scale.

Status: idea. The BLE mesh layer is well-understood and open-source libraries exist (Bridgefy SDK, Berty's mesh stack). The product opportunity is in trust, Indian-language UX, festival / disaster / mass-gathering specific features, and a privacy posture that withstands scrutiny. The market figures below are scenarios — what becomes possible if mesh-chat becomes a default install for festival-goers and emergency-prep households.

Connectivity is not a constant. It is a privilege that disappears the moment a tower goes down, a network is throttled, or thirty thousand people gather in the same field. A mesh chat app is what democracy looks like when the pipes fail.

How does it work without internet?

Phones speak Bluetooth Low Energy directly to nearby phones. Messages hop from device to device until they reach the recipient — like a relay race of phones.

What is the actual range?

Direct device-to-device: roughly 30–100 metres depending on obstacles. With a mesh of users in between, useful range stretches to 1 km+ in any crowd.

Is it secure?

Messages are end-to-end encrypted. No server, no central log, no metadata stored. The only people who can read your message are you and the recipient.

How long does the battery last?

Default duty-cycled mode adds about 5–8% battery drain per hour of active use. Festival Mode (always-on listening) is heavier — we recommend a power bank for all-day events.

Can I broadcast to everyone in range?

Yes — public channels let you broadcast to anyone within mesh range. Useful for festival announcements, lost-and-found and SOS alerts.

Will it work on iPhones too?

Yes. iOS uses Apple's Multipeer Connectivity framework, Android uses BLE — they interoperate transparently in our app.

Is this legal in India?

Yes. Bluetooth peer-to-peer chat is fully legal. We are not a telecom service and do not require DoT licensing.

What if there's an internet shutdown?

The app keeps working — that is exactly the design intent. Mesh chat is independent of all cellular and Wi-Fi infrastructure.
