Travel Buddy (Local & Worldwide)
A verified social network for travellers — find a buddy, share the trip, split the cost.
Travel Buddy is a BIDUA concept for a verified social travel companion app — a place where solo travellers post an itinerary, get matched with other vetted travellers going to the same place at the same time, split costs transparently, and travel together with a built-in safety layer.
Indian solo travel is exploding — Booking.com's Indian outlook reports more than 70% of Indian travellers consider solo trips, and millennials and Gen Z make up the bulk of bookings to Himachal, Ladakh, the Northeast, Goa and Southeast Asia. But solo means expensive (no room-sharing), riskier (no second pair of eyes), and lonelier than most people want to admit.
Existing options — Facebook groups, Reddit threads, WhatsApp circles — work, but with no verification, no escrow, and no safety net. Travel Buddy is the verified, escrowed and safety-first version of what people already do informally.
The hardest part of solo travel in India is not the loneliness — it is finding the one other person whose budget, pace and trust threshold matches yours, without putting yourself in a stranger's car.
The opportunity, on its own terms.
India is becoming a nation of solo travellers — quickly.
Booking.com, MakeMyTrip and Thomas Cook trend reports all point to solo travel as the fastest-growing segment for under-35 Indians.
Trust infrastructure is finally national.
Aadhaar eKYC, DigiLocker, video-KYC and UPI mean a verified-identity travel app is technically feasible without expensive bespoke infrastructure.
The female-traveller wave needs safety primitives.
Women-led travel communities (Wandering Jane, Girls on the Go) prove demand — but the supply of safe, verified men-and-women-together platforms is essentially zero.
Cost pressure is real.
Inflation in hospitality and flights makes splitting a Goa trip 50/50 attractive to a generation that already splits Swiggy bills via UPI.
Sized in three rings.
- 73%+ Indian travellers consider solo trips (Booking.com Solo Traveller Report).
- Women's safety in travel is a structural pain point — verified-buddy supply is a clear product wedge.
- Tinder, Bumble and Hinge proved that Indians under 35 will pay for verified discovery — travel is an adjacent vertical.
- Group-trip splitter apps (Splitwise) confirm willingness to share costs digitally; we extend that to discovery.
How it works, end to end.
Verified profiles
Mandatory Aadhaar/Passport KYC, optional employer or college verification, social-graph cross-check via LinkedIn/Instagram. Tiered badges (Bronze/Silver/Gold) signal trust depth to other users.
Trip-first matching
Users don't swipe on people — they post a trip (destination, dates, budget band, vibe) and the algorithm surfaces matches. The atomic unit of the platform is a trip, not a profile.
In-app cost split & escrow
Bookings (hotels, cabs, activities) made through the app are auto-split. Escrow holds funds until check-in, reducing the 'one person paid for the room and disappeared' risk.
Women-only and verified-only modes
Female users can opt into a women-only matching pool. Premium tier surfaces only Gold-verified profiles.
Curated trip packs
Hand-picked itineraries (Spiti 7-day, Sri Lanka 5-day) with pre-vetted local operators. Travel Buddy earns a 10–15% margin on bookings.
Three compounding phases.

Who else is here — and why we're different.
- Trip-first matching, not profile-first — fundamentally different from dating-app UX.
- Aadhaar-tier KYC is mandatory, not optional — the trust ceiling is higher from day one.
- Built-in escrow and cost-splitting — removes the 'one person ghosts after booking' failure mode.
- Women-only mode by default-opt-in, addressing the single biggest market objection.
What can go wrong — and how we plan for it.
Safety incident liability
Mitigation: Mandatory KYC, in-app SOS, 24/7 helpline, insurance partnership, clear terms-of-service liability framework with hospitality lawyers.
Cold-start liquidity problem
Mitigation: Launch by destination clusters (Manali-Kasol, Goa, Pondicherry) where solo-traveller density is naturally high.
Misuse as dating platform
Mitigation: Strict community guidelines, trip-first UX, content moderation team, automatic flagging of romantic-DM patterns.
Regulatory ambiguity (tour operator licensing)
Mitigation: Platform model with regional operator partners holding the operator licences — Travel Buddy stays a marketplace.
Chargeback and dispute volume
Mitigation: Escrow holds funds; mediation panel built in; rolling user reputation score influences future matching.

How do I know my buddy is real?
Every profile must complete Aadhaar/Passport KYC. Optional layers (employer, college, social) raise trust to Gold tier. You can filter your matches by minimum verification level.
Is there a women-only option?
Yes. Female users can opt into a women-only matching pool. The default match feed for women excludes unverified male profiles.
What if someone cancels last minute?
Escrow protects pre-paid bookings. Cancellation policies and refunds are codified per trip. Repeated cancellers see their reputation score drop, which affects future matching.
Does Travel Buddy book my flights and hotels?
From phase 2 (2028) yes — in-app booking with auto-split. Until then, the app suggests bookings and you confirm externally.
What's the cost?
Discovery and basic matching are free. Premium (₹299–₹599/month) unlocks unlimited matches, Gold-verified-only mode, and priority support.
Is it only for Indian destinations?
Launch is India-focused. International (UAE, Thailand, Indonesia) is on the 2030 roadmap.
What about LGBTQ+ travellers?
All identity and preference fields are inclusive. Community guidelines explicitly protect LGBTQ+ users; safety reporting is anonymous.
Can travel agents and small operators list on the app?
Yes, from the booking-platform phase. Operators are vetted similarly to user profiles, with reputation scores tied to traveller reviews.
Want to test the beta?
We are inviting 5,000 verified travellers across 5 metros into the 2027 closed beta. If you travel solo and would like a verified buddy, let us know.
